Square Enix Embraces Arbitrum for Symbiogenesis NFT Character Minting

The gaming powerhouse Square Enix, known for iconic franchises like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, has made a major move in the world of NFTs by shifting its Symbiogenesis blockchain game’s character minting to the Ethereum layer-2 network known as Arbitrum.

This decision to move to Arbitrum is aimed at reducing gas fees for minting NFTs, making the process more affordable and user-friendly. The shift comes after the initial release of 500 character NFTs on the Ethereum mainnet in December, which drew attention for the unique character names like “Egg” and “Starvation.”

Now, Square Enix plans to release 1,500 new NFT characters in a three-day public auction starting on May 31, with characters being released in small batches. The company hopes that this move to Arbitrum will make the minting process more accessible and cost-effective for users, ultimately driving adoption and engagement.

While this shift is a significant development for Symbiogenesis, it’s unclear whether Square Enix will continue to use Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain scaling network, for future in-game NFT assets. The company has not provided clarity on this matter, and the decision may depend on user feedback and the performance of Arbitrum during the upcoming auction.
